Yeast infections occur far less frequently in men than in women, but prolonged use of antibiotics, diabetes or having a compromised immune system can increase susceptibility. Symptoms can include redness, a rash and itching, but the infection typically is cured easily with over-the-counter medication.

Typical costs:

  • For patients covered by health insurance, out-of-pocket costs for yeast infection treatment typically consist of the entire cost of an over-the-counter medication or a prescription drug copay of about $10-$45, depending on whether the drug is generic, preferred or non-preferred. Prescription yeast infection treatment typically is covered by health insurance.
  • For patients not covered by health insurance, yeast infection treatment typically costs about $7-$20 for an over-the-counter antifungal cream. Or, it costs from less than $5 to more than $30 for a one-dose prescription antifungal pill. For example, CVS.com charges about $7-$9 for generic antifungal creams[1] , and charges about $14-$20 for brand-name antifungal creams. And Walmart sells the generic antifungal pill fluconazole[2] , often prescribed as a single-dose treatment, for $4 under its generic prescription program. Drugstore.com charges about $33 for a single dose of the brand-name equivalent, Diflucan.

What should be included:
  • According to the Mayo Clinic[3] , male yeast infections are easy to treat, using the same over-the-counter antifungal cream sold for vaginal yeast infections. The Mayo Clinic advises men to rub the cream on the penis twice per day for about a week and, if symptoms do not go away, to consult a doctor to get checked for underlying conditions such as diabetes.
Additional costs:
  • It is recommended to wear loose-fitting cotton underwear to speed healing and help prevent future infections.
Discounts:
  • The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services offers a locator[4] for clinics with sliding fee scales based on income.
  • Some drug manufacturers offer patient assistance programs. Any patient without prescription drug coverage who also is not eligible for Medicare typically qualifies for Together Rx Access[5] , a discount card that offers 25-40% off many brand-name drugs.
  • Some manufacturers of over-the-counter treatment offer coupons. For example, Monistat has printable coupons[6] for $2 or $3 off.
Shopping for male yeast infection treatment:
  • A family doctor can diagnose and prescribe treatment for a male yeast infection. Planned Parenthood, which offers sexual health services for men and women, has a health center locator[7] .
  • MedicineNet.com offers a guide[8] to various causes of jock itch, including candida, and when to see a doctor.
