Vaginal rejuvenation (vaginoplasty) is a surgery that can correct vaginal looseness caused by childbirth or aging; it can tighten and increase muscle tone and control in the vaginal walls and decrease vaginal diameter.

Typical costs:

  • Vaginal rejuvenation typically costs $4,000 to $8,000. For example, Dr. Royal H. Benson III[1] charges $4,000 to $5,000. The Beverly Physicians Group in California charges $4,000 plus a surgical center fee of $1,500 for a total of $5,500. South Coast Urogynecology[2] charges about $7,000. And Dr. John Miklos[3] , a urogynecologist in Atlanta, charges $6,000 to $8,000.
  • Vaginal rejuvenation typically is considered a cosmetic procedure and is not usually covered by insurance. For example, Aetna[4] excludes vaginal rejuvenation from coverage. However, in cases where a patient suffers from a condition such as incontinence or a fallen uterus, for which most insurance companies do cover surgery, the two procedures can be combined, saving operating room and anesthesia costs.

What should be included:
  • In vaginal rejuvenation, the procedure is tailored to the individual; however, typically the surgeon uses a laser or scalpel to make incisions, removes excess skin, then tightens the remaining tissue.
  • Vaginal rejuvenation typically is an outpatient procedure, usually done under general anesthesia or epidural anesthesia, and takes one to two hours. After the procedure, it is necessary to take one to two weeks off from work and to abstain from sexual intercourse for about 6 weeks.

Additional costs:
  • Patients usually need to take an over-the-counter stool softener before and after surgery.
  • The doctor might prescribe pain medication and recommend ice packs to aid recovery.

  • Some providers offer discounts for multiple procedures; for example, some women choose to get labiaplasty, which reduces the size of the labia, at the same time.
Shopping for vaginal rejuvenation:
  • Vaginal rejuvenation should be performed by either a board-certified gynecologist, a board-certified urologist or a board-certified plastic surgeon. To find a gynecologist, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists[6] offers a doctor finder by state. A urogynecologist is a subspecialist -- a gynecologist with several years of additional training in pelvic floor disorders and vaginal reconstructive surgery -- and so might be most qualified to perform this surgery; the American Urogynecologic Society[7] offers a provider locator, or a gynecologist can provide a referral. To find a urologist, the American Urological Association[8] offers a doctor finder by zip code, but check to make sure the doctor is certified by the American Board of Urology[9] . If you use a plastic surgeon, make sure the doctor is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Both the American Society of Plastic Surgeons[10] and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery[11] offer referral services.
  • It is important to find a provider who is experienced in performing vaginal rejuvenation and has a good reputation; ask the doctor how many vaginal rejuvenation surgeries he or she has performed and ask to see before-and-after photos of previous patients.
