With Health Insurance: Lab and Prescription Copays
Without Health Insurance: $30-$130+
Chlamydia is a very common sexually transmitted bacterial infection. Symptoms can include burning during urination, discharge and pain, but many patients have no symptoms. Chlamydia is easily treated with antibiotics.
Typical costs:
For patients covered by health insurance, out-of-pocket costs for chlamydia treatment typically consist of doctor visit, lab and prescription drug copays. Chlamydia treatment typically is covered by health insurance.
For patients not covered by health insurance, chlamydia diagnosis and treatment typically costs from less than $30-$130 or more for laboratory testing and from less than $15-$50 or more for antibiotics. For example, Planned Parenthood in Houston charges $28 for a chlamydia test[1] , and AnyLabTestNow.com charges $89 for a chlamydia urine test or $129 for a combined chlamydia/gonorrhea test. Drugstore.com charges about $13 for a one-week course of the generic antibiotic doxycycline hyclate. And
Drugstore.com charges about $30 for a one-gram dose of the generic antibiotic azithromycin and about $50 for the brand-name equivalent, Zithromax. According to a study published in the journal Sexually Transmitted Diseases, the average cost for an episode of chlamydia was $99 for the doctor visit, $44 for the diagnostic test and $36 for the treatment for a total of $179.
Chlamydia is diagnosed by a laboratory test on urine or a specimen taken from the cervix or penis. Often a test for gonorrhea is done at the same time since the diseases cause similar symptoms.
Chlamydia is treated with oral antibiotics -- usually one dose of azithromycin[2] (brand name Zithromax) or a week of doxycycline[3] taken twice a day.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers information on chlamydia and treatment[4] .
Additional costs:
The patient's sexual partners must also be tested and treated.
If left untreated, chlamydia in women can lead to fallopian tube scarring that can cause infertility, for which in-vitro fertilization typically costs $8,000-$15,000 per cycle.
Discounts:
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services offers a locator[5] for clinics with sliding fee scales based on income.
