- Most abortions -- 88 percent -- are obtained by week 13; however, sometimes a health risk faced by the woman or other reasons cause women to seek later abortions, according to the National Abortion Federation[1] . An abortion usually is considered late-term at 20 weeks, and it is much more difficult to find providers for second-trimester abortions.
- Cost examples include: the Aalto Women's Center[2] in Houston, Texas, which charges $320 up to 11 weeks, up to $595 at their maximum of 15 weeks; and Choice Medical Group[3] in San Francisco, Calif., which charges $450 to $600 up to 12 weeks, $1,000 at 15 to 16 weeks; and $2,000 at 20 to 24 weeks.
- For patients covered by insurance, out-of-pocket costs typically include a copay for routine outpatient surgery -- usually between $15 and $150, depending on the plan. For medical abortions, out-of-pocket costs usually include copays for the prescription drug and for the office visit.
- Elective abortion is sometimes covered by health insurance. For example, Women's Health Practice[4] works with BlueCross BlueShield, United Healthcare and Unicare. However, five states -- Colorado, Kentucky, Missouri, North Dakota and Oklahoma -- restrict private insurers' ability to cover abortions, allowing it only under certain circumstances, such as rape or for health reasons. Plans vary, so it is important to check with your insurer to see if abortion is covered, and to check with the clinic to see if they accept your insurance.
What should be included:
- There are several types of abortion that fall into two groups -- surgical and medical. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists[5] provides an overview of the various types of abortion procedures.
- In a vacuum aspiration, the most widely used type of surgical abortion, which can be done through the end of the first 12 weeks, the doctor administers local anesthesia, dilates the cervix, then uses a thin tube with gentle suction to remove the contents of the uterus. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists[6] provides descriptions of the procedure.
- In dilation and evacuation, which usually is done in the second 12 weeks, the doctor will administer local or general anesthesia, then use probes to dilate the cervix, use a hollow tube with suction to remove tissue, use forceps to remove larger pieces of tissue and then scrape the uterine walls.
- In medical abortions, doctors prescribe one or a combination of the drugs mifepristone, methotrexate and misoprostol. Sometimes, one drug is administered at a doctor's office and a second drug is taken at home 24 to 72 hours later, causing bleeding that can resemble a heavy period. A follow-up visit will be scheduled for two weeks later to make sure the abortion is complete. This type of abortion must be performed early --within the first seven to nine weeks.
- A pre-surgery ultrasound, lab work and a follow-up visit usually are included in the flat fee for an abortion.

- Pain medication and antibiotics can cost extra. Some clinics offer oral Valium for $200 or more extra.
- Sometimes, blood tests are required after the procedure to make sure all pregnancy tissue has been removed from the uterus, to prevent infection; these can cost about $100.
Discounts:- Abortions at low-cost clinics can cost 20 to 30 percent less than abortions at a doctor's office. The National Abortion Federation[7] offers a toll-free hotline that provides referrals to area clinics and information on financial assistance options.
- The National Network of Abortion Funds[8] offers information about abortion funding for women who qualify, as well as a map[9] of state Medicaid coverage.
Shopping for an abortion:- Contact your gynecologist to see whether he or she performs abortions. The National Abortion Federation[10] offers a clinic locator by state; or call the NAF toll-free hotline at 1-800-772-9100.
- Make sure the provider you choose is licensed by the state, will do a pregnancy test and a pelvic exam or ultrasound to determine how far along the pregnancy is, will answer your questions and tell you the total cost upfront. Also make sure the clinic has arrangements with a local hospital in case of complication. The National Abortion Federation[11] offers advice on choosing a provider.
- The Guttmacher Institute[12] offers information on abortion restrictions in each state.
- Abortion is considered a low-risk procedure, especially in early pregnancy. Risks include incomplete abortion; infection; hemorrhage; damage to the uterus or other organs, such as bladder and bowels; or a risk of death of one in 100,000.

There's only one abortion clinic in Kentucky and it's $700 for the pills before 9 weeks and goes up in price for the suction. No insurance can be used in Kentucky.
In 2015 I had an abortion in Indianapolis Indiana and it was $500 at planned parenthood.
Be aware some states have waiting periods which means you will have to stay in a hotel if you are out of state and miss work.
Lastly, I called around and Chicago is around $400 and so are ones in Michigan.

Upon first consultation and exam I was given a quote. I agreed to it and made the 2nd appointment for the procedure to be done. I arrived and was given medication to prep the cervix. 1 hour later I was called up to finish consenting paperwork and make the final payment. At that time they told me I would have to pay double the original quote given me. The original quote was $550, final quote $1,200. I was alarmed and told them that wasn't what I agreed on. The nurse was very rude and aggressive. Given that I had already taken the prep medication and had been there so long I just paid it. Had I waited or went somewhere else I would have had to start the whole process again. Very disappointed and in a stressful situation.

This is the most difficult choice some people have ever had to make. But the nurses didn't judge me at all and talked to me and answered all my questions. I was really worried about the procedure being painful, but they helped me feel very comfortable. The doctor, Bernard Rosenfeld, is really good, look him up, and they actually include everything some clinics might charge extra for. They even give you a bottle of pain meds to take home.

My fiance and I have been broken up about 5 months now (we are still very close) but agreed that we could see other people until we are ready a little while back I started "having fun" with this guy and just found out Im pregnant I have taken 3 test and believe I am 6 to 8 weeks when I found out and was going to tell the guy I tried to get him to come over so i could tell him the situation in person he wouldn't come without me telling him anything so he made me text it to him. well when I told him he said it wasn't his because he pulled out after I told him he could still get me pregnant he still wouldn't listen or answer the phone. I tried to reason with him and be respectful by telling him and giving him an option and I hope that will always be in the back of his head like I know it will be for me. Charges for an "incomplete miscarriage" (the fetus naturally stopped growing / died at 9 weeks due to unknown causes). I spontaneously went into a mini-labor at 12 weeks which was very painful and led me to the ER where I passed the fetus, but the doctors recommended a D&C to make sure all the material was cleared out and to prevent hemorrhage. I'm not sure if I'm pregnant just yet but. I'm considering having an abortion because if I am I know it wont be by my current bf. We broke up a while back bc I thought he was cheating on me so to get back at him I broke up with him and slept with someone else. It did make me feel better at the time and I did use protection but I'm unsure if it completely stayed on. It lasted literally .5 seconds but I know that doesn't matter. But if I am pregnant I will be getting the softtouch abortion option due to the fact it doesn't have any major side effects and is basically natural so if anyone is early in weeks I suggest that you look into that one. Bc its better emotional if you make the decision before a child even fully develops bc then it's like your not killing anything. Well that's it I hope this helps someone

I am struggling to pay the few bills that I have and I am struggling with being happy with myself, as a person. I think I may be pregnant. I didn't have my cycle last month and it hasn't came on this month… well not yet at least. I know for sure I want to get an abortion because in a few months I will be leaving for basic training. My father told me he couldn't handle another baby in the house... If my situation was different IE married house good job I would have chosen differently but it's not. I was an 18 years old college student when I first got pregnant in 2010 and I was terrified. I felt like I was following in my mom's footsteps and felt like if I would of told her I would have let her down. So, at 9 wks I went and got it done and honestly the hardest part was after. The vaccuum was nothing, the meds they put u on was nothing. It was an okay experience, but afterwards I felt like I wasn't the same. I cried hard for about an hour. But after I got home I sucked it up because my mom had NO idea. She still doesn't. And now unfortunately I am afraid that I may be pregnant again...and even though my fiance and I are going strong right now we are not ready for a kid at all. So, I'm still praying that I'm not pregnant! But anyways all i can say is do what you feel is right. If you're worried about people looking down on you trust me, it doesn't happen. ALL of my friends sticked with me through it all and then when they ended up getting pregnant I stuck with them through whatever their decision. And another thing. It is perfectly okay to feel afraid. I was scared out of my mind, but after getting it done it really wasnt that bad. At all. I hope this helped

Have had 2 abortions at this center which is now called whole womens health of Baltimore on BelAir rd in md. They were amazing. The cost would of been $525 but my insurance at the time covered them both. Maybe i feel nothing from the procedures because i had general anesthesia. I do feel one thing n that is HATE for all these so called baby savers. It is not a baby until viable n doctors are not obligated to do anything before viability. Meaning u deliver before viability, they dont have to "save" it. Plus 99% of yall bitch n moan about your tax dollars supporting us pofolks, yet want to take our right to choose away which will end in women havin even mor babies these days they cannot support n are obligated to get help from ss and wic just to feed them. N you still whine about your hard earned money going to supposedly "lazy" women who wont get jobs when in most cases is because they are tied down with a baby. They wana work but in most cases childcare costs take 99.99% of a paycheck.

I have never had an abortion but several of my friends have and they all say it is hell to live with. We all grew up in the 70's and thought nothing of it at the time but they are all mothers now and some grandmothers and they all still have a hard time living with it. I did not judge them then or now but feel so sorry they have the rest of their lives to live with their choice. I do think our biggest failure as a people is lack of education for our young women. We need to eliminate the need for abortion through open communication!!
