Lip Reduction Cost

How Much Does Lip Reduction Cost?

average costOne Lip: $1,500-$4,000high costBoth Lips: $3,000-$8,000

Lip reduction is a surgical procedure used to reduce the size of the upper or lower lip, or both, in patients with overly prominent lips caused by genetics or a previous lip augmentation procedure.

Typical costs:

  • Lip reduction typically costs between $1,500 and $4,000 per lip for a total of $3,000 to $8,000 for upper and lower lip. For example, Dr. Sam Lam[1] in Dallas, Texas, charges $2,500 per lip. Dr. Edward Domanskis[2] , in Southern California, charges about $3,000 to $4,000 per lip. And Dr. Felice's Youthful Images[3] , in Connecticut, charges $2,500 to $4,500 for the upper lip or lower lip, or $4,500 to $6,500 for both lips.
  • Lip reduction is considered a cosmetic procedure, so typically is not covered by health insurance.

What should be included:
  • Lip reduction is usually done in the doctor's office with a local nerve block or IV sedation. The surgeon makes an incision toward the inside of the mouth, excises a portion of the lip (or the excess filler or implant if the procedure is being done to correct a previous augmentation), then closes the incision with sutures. The procedure usually takes 20 to 40 minutes per lip. This procedure is used whether the surgeon is correcting naturally large lips or a previous augmentation; Dr. Sam Lam offers a lip reduction FAQ[4] .
  • Lip reduction typically requires at least three days off work during which the patient must ice the lip and may only eat soft foods that do not require chewing; patients with physically strenuous jobs will need more time off, and exercise cannot be resumed for at least three weeks. Swelling should go down almost entirely within several weeks, but final results might not be visible for two to three months.

Additional costs:
  • The surgeon might prescribe steroid pills to reduce swelling.
  • Patients who get lip reduction to correct a previous lip enhancement probably will need to have their lips re-enhanced post-surgery to achieve the results they were initially seeking. Enhancement ranges in cost from $400 to $1,500 for injectables to $1,500 to $6,000 for lip augmentation implants or fat grafts.
Discounts:
  • Some plastic surgeons offer a package deal for the upper and lower lips.
Shopping for lip reduction:
  • Tip: Make sure the doctor is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has privileges at an accredited hospital, even if the surgery is not taking place there. Both the American Society of Plastic Surgeons[5] and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery[6] offer referral services. Also ask how much experience the surgeon has performing lip reductions, and look at before-and-after photographs of previous patients.
  • Risks of lip reduction include infection, bleeding, permanent numbness, scarring, asymmetry and dissatisfaction with results.
