Lip augmentation with implants or fat grafts can provide permanent correction for thin lips or lips that have lost fullness, wrinkled or sagged due to aging or smoking. (Injectable fillers are a less expensive, but less permanent alternative.)
Typical costs:
Lip augmentation typically costs about $1,500 to $3,000 per lip for a total of $3,000 to $6,000 for both lips. The cost depends on the doctor, geographic location and type of implant; the cost of synthetic implants is at the lower end, while the cost of fat grafts (not injections) from the patient's own face is at the higher end. For example, Dr. William K. Boss Jr.[1] in New Jersey charges $2,000 to $5,000 for synthetic implants. The Swan Center for Plastic Surgery[2] in Georgia charges $3,500 to $4,000. And Dr. Brooke Seckel[3] in Massachusetts quotes the cost of lip implants at $1,500 to $5,000, as does Dr. Brent Moelleken[4] in California.
Lip augmentation is considered cosmetic surgery, so it typically is not covered by health insurance.
After the patient receives either local anesthesia or IV sedation, the surgeon typically makes tiny incisions either inside or at the corners of the lips, then inserts the implant material. Implant options include Alloderm, which is made from collagen from deceased donors, processed so the recipient's body will not reject it; GoreTex, SoftForm or soft ePTFE made from a synthetic, medical-grade material similar to that used to make Gore-Tex outdoor gear; FulFil or Verafil, which are new saline implants; or, a graft of the patient's own fat.
If local anesthesia is used, some patients may go back to work the following day, but some take two to three days off to allow lip swelling to go down. It might be necessary to limit the diet to soft foods for a few days.
Additional costs:
If you are unhappy with results, you probably will need to have surgery to have the implant removed.
Discounts:
Many plastic surgeons offer discounts for patients having multiple procedures.
Shopping for lip augmentation:
Tip: Make sure the doctor is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has privileges at an accredited hospital, even if the surgery is not taking place there. Both the American Society of Plastic Surgeons[5] and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery[6] offer referral services. Also ask how much experience the surgeon has performing lip augmentations, and look at before-and-after photographs of previous patients. Some experts recommend seeking out a doctor who specializes in facial plastic surgery.
Be aware that patients with oral herpes, blood clotting problems, certain connective tissue disorders or lupus might not be good candidates for lip augmentation.
Risks of lip augmentation include bleeding, swelling, infection, lumpiness, scars, numbness and asymmetrical or uneven lips, shifting of the implant material and dissatisfaction with results. At RealSelf.com[7] , patients offer reviews of their lip augmentation experiences.
