Liposuction for men is used to target localized areas of excess fat that have not responded to diet and exercise. Common areas treated include male breasts, abdomen and love handles.

Typical costs:
  • Liposuction for men typically costs $3,000 to almost $7,000 per body part, depending on the body part and the patient. It generally costs more than liposuction for women because fat in men tends to be more fibrous and more difficult to remove, and because men tend to be larger than women. Dr. Jeffrey Melton, in Chicago, offers an overview of male liposuction costs.
  • Liposuction to reduce male breasts -- a condition called gynecomastia -- costs about $3,000 to $5,000. For example, Dr. Jeffrey Melton charges about $3,000 for an average-sized man whose fat does not extend very far into the arm-pit area. Dr.Gordon B. Roget in California charges $3,500 -- or $4,000 if the fat extends into the arm-pit region. And the La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre in California charges about $5,000 for male breast reduction.
  • Liposuction for men on love handles costs about $2,500 to $5,500. For example, Metropolitan Plastic Surgery in the Washington, D.C. area, charges $2,750 for male liposuction on the love handles. And the San Francisco Plastic Surgery & Laser Center charges about $5,300 for male liposuction on love handles.
  • Liposuction for men on the abdomen typically costs $4,500 to $6,500. For example, at the Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery in Texas, it costs between $5,000 and $6,500.
  • Liposuction is considered a cosmetic procedure, so it typically is not covered by health insurance.
What should be included:
  • During the initial consultation, the surgeon will conduct an examination and discuss patient goals, techniques, risks and cost.
  • During the procedure, after the patient is placed under local or general anesthesia, the surgeon will make small incisions and insert a narrow tube, called a canula, to break up and remove excess fat. Some newer techniques, such as tumescent liposuction (in which the doctor injects a saline solution to make fat deposits easier to remove) and ultrasonic liposuction (in which the doctor uses sound waves to melt the fat) have made the process safer with better results, and liposuction typically is an outpatient procedure. The National Institutes of Health provides an overview of liposuction.
  • Addition costs:
  • The doctor might prescribe antibiotics and pain medication after the procedure.
  • After liposuction, you probably will need to wear a male liposuction garment, which can cost less than $50 to $150 or more.
  • Recovery typically requires up to one week off work.
Discounts:
  • Many cosmetic surgery centers publish discount offers on their websites. For example, Metropolitan Plastic Surgery has run a $2,000 special ($750 off) for male liposuction on the love handles. Many surgeons also offer discounts for liposuction on multiple body parts.
Shopping for liposuction for men:
  • Good candidates for liposuction are healthy non-smokers close to their ideal weight who have areas of excess fat that have not responded to diet and exercise. Good skin elasticity also helps achieve desired results.
  • Tip: Make sure the doctor is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has privileges at an accredited hospital, even if the surgery is not taking place there. Both the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery offer referral services. It also is a good idea to ask about experience performing male liposuction and to see before-and-after photographs of previous male patients.
  • Risks of liposuction include shock, fluid overload, bleeding, blood clots, fat embolism, nerve or tissue damage, burns, uneven fat removal, scarring, drug reactions and even death.
