States that allow medical marijuana typically require patients to be registered with the state and have a valid recommendation from a doctor. Most states require that patients renew their recommendation annually. A state-by-state summary[1] of marijuana laws is available through the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Typical costs:

  • States allowing medical marijuana cards require doctor's written statements recommending usage. In many cases, doctor recommendations can be obtained from a patient's primary care physician for the cost of a regular office visit.
  • Some states have clinics that solely provide medical marijuana recommendations. Generally, first-time appointments in the clinics cost $80-$200. For example, San Jose Evaluations[2] in California provides recommendations for $59-$69 for patients. The Arizona Cannabis Physician's Group charges $150 for new patient recommendations.
  • Some states require registration with a state-maintained registry of medical marijuana patients; other states make it optional. For example, Colorado[3] currently charges $35 for registration; Rhode Island[4] charges $75. Typically, states charge $35-$200 for registration.

What should be included:
  • A visit with a physician should include a discussion of medical history. (Most states require a physician to certify a serious medical condition.) The doctor should provide paperwork to the patient certifying a serious condition and the recommendation to use medical marijuana.
  • If a state requires registration, a patient should expect to receive the state-issued ID card.
Additional costs:
  • Most states require annual renewals of medical marijuana cards, though some states allow renewals every two years. Renewing a recommendation through a medical clinic typically is $20-$50 less than the original recommendation.
Shopping for a medical marijuana card:
  • MarijuanaDoctors.com offers a list of doctors[5] in various states offering recommendations. The site also provides updated step-by-step guides for obtaining cards in each state where medical marijuana laws have been enacted.
  • Marijuana advocacy group NORML provides legal information in each state[6] .
  • Marijuana-caregiver.com, a site for legal caregivers, provides legal tips for medical-marijuana patients[7] .
