With Health Insurance: Copay or 10%-50% Coinsurance
Without Health Insurance: $5,000-$100,000+
An angiogram is a test that uses a special type of X-ray, fluoroscopy, to take images of the blood flow in arteries or veins in the head, arms, chest, legs or back. It can detect blood flow problems such as aneurysm or blockage, can reveal the extent of atherosclerosis, can show blood flow to a tumor, and can aid a surgeon in preparing for vascular or transplant surgery. Risks include bleeding, infection, kidney damage, stroke or heart attack.
Typical costs:
For patients covered by health insurance, the cost of an angiogram typically would consist of a copay or coinsurance of 10%-50% or more. An angiogram typically would be covered by health insurance when medically necessary to diagnose or treat an illness or condition.
For patients not covered by health insurance, the cost of an angiogram can range from less than $5,000-$100,000 or more, depending on the facility and the area of the body being examined. In general, angiography of the arms, legs, head and chest costs less than angiography of the abdomen or spine. According to NewChoiceHealth.com, an arm angiogram[1] costs an average of $4,700, a chest angiogram[2] costs an average of $4,800, a head and neck angiogram[3] costs an average of $16,200, a spinal angiogram[4] costs an average of $17,800, and an abdominal angiogram[5] costs an average of $30,800. Pennsylvania cardiologist Stephen Sinatra[6] estimates the cost of a coronary angiogram at $5,000-$10,000. And Baptist Memorial Health Care in Tennessee charges, not including doctor fee, about $12,000 for an angiogram of the lungs, $21,000 for the arm or leg, $22,000 for the head and neck, $28,000 for the abdomen and $108,000 for the spine.
The patient will lie on an X-ray table and will be hooked up to an IV to receive fluids and possibly a sedative, and to electrodes to monitor the heart. A catheter typically is inserted into a vein in the groin or near the elbow, and is pushed up through blood vessels to the area being examined. A special contrast dye is then is injected and X-rays are then taken from many angles.
During an angiogram, treatments such as removing a blockage in a blood vessel or stopping internal bleeding can be performed, if necessary.
The procedure, which can be outpatient or inpatient, usually takes one to three hours. Some patients are able to go home the same day, while others require a hospital stay of a day or more.
Depending on the reason for the test and the results, the doctor might recommend additional tests or treatment. For example, if a coronary angiogram shows artery blockage, a doctor might recommend a nuclear stress test[8] to check blood flow throughout the heart. This can cost up to $4,000 or more. A doctor might also recommend angioplasty, which can cost $30,000 or more, or heart bypass surgery, which can cost $70,000-$200,000 or more.
Discounts:
Many hospitals give discounts of up to 30% or more to uninsured/cash-paying patients. For example, Washington Hospital Healthcare System[9] in California offers a 35% discount.
Shopping for an angiogram:
A family doctor or specialist can make a referral to a radiologist[10] , a physician who specializes in imaging, and should be board-certified by the American Board of Radiology, or a hospital where an angiogram can be performed.
Depending on the reason for the test, the individual case and the results, a patient might need to consult another specialist such as a cardiologist, hematologist or pulmonologist -- all doctors who should be board-certified in internal medicine[11] with additional training in their area of focus.
For patients with suspected heart disease, a standard coronary angiogram using a catheter might be necessary for diagnosis. However, for some patients, a less invasive CT angiogram might be an alternative. The Cleveland Clinic offers information on the CT angiogram[12] .

Excellent and rapid procedure, professionally executed by very competent staff. Luckily for me showed an absence of any constriction or blockages. No financial charge at all, including ambulance transport to and from the cardiac unit, as we have a comprehensive national health service which is not mired in gouging and corruption. There is a real alternative!
I live in Houston, the range for an MRI is $600-$5000. Insurance must not pay more than the media price, this will force patients to shop around for lower cost. We must STOP these highway robberies by doctors and Hospitals. It is a crime.
Even though they told me they’d take my ACA insurance through employeer and I have to pay my deductible I was charged 49k and my insurance says there is a clause that says they can reject that after procedure done. Tells me settle for 25k and $1200 month. What’s even more insane is no stent. Was false diagnosis. I had agreement for only 2k worthless.
I have the angiogram scheduled for April '21. Fortunately, I have Medicare with Part B,C,D covered by Kaiser. My payment is $20 (copay) - although I am sure Kaiser will sneak in some last charges.
I too have Aetna insurance. I still have to pay $4,000.00. The actual procedure took 20 minutes. I had no other tests done as it wasn't necessary. I was charged $950.00 for one dose of Versed and Fentanyl. Didn't even notice it. I was wide awake throughout the procedure. I am contacting Aetna and Sutter to try and negotiate a less out of pocket amount and get a breakdown of all charges. Our medical system has no oversight and these corporations charge whatever they want. Just plain wrong.

Myself attacked with 90% blockage problem on both veins of Heart on 22.01.2019 and admitted into that Hospital in Ahmedabad, Gujrat, India on 25.01.2019 after preliminary treatment from other private Hospital. My surgery (Angiogram & Angioplasty) was performed on 26.o1.2019 & released on 28.01.2019. I am from West Bengal state of India and I am taking rest at my home for recovery..
In hospital about 5 hours, outpatient, through wrist no complications or other services. My part $4,000. There is no justification for this amount. My part alone should have been sufficient. Our health care system is broken and the relationship between the insurance companies & hospitals is incestious.
I had coronary agiogram with 2 hour after care. Received bill of 34,000 . Aetna covered 29,000 leaving me with a 5000 balance. Seems a bit over priced.
I had 4 Echos, 1 stress test, 2 CT scans, 1 MRI, something they put down my throat, and a Angiogram, aorta valve repair, aorta replacement, 7 days in hospital. total bill 256k after insurance I paid 16733$
It was all billed to my insurance plan. I had already met my deductible at the beginning of the year so I paid $0. The insurance only paid out $6453.12. The actual procedure was billed: $1290.00. Insurance paid: $1142.82. The "Pharmacy" for the drugs needed to sleep me and to numb the leg was billed $36.54 and insurance paid $22.40. The surgical supplies were billed $854.64. Paid was $523.89. The laboratory was billed $168.34. Paid was $97.91. The cost for the cath lab was $6308.02. Paid was $3866.82. The "drugs with specific intent", probably the dye for the angiogram. Cost $59.00 and paid was $36.17. The recovery room was $1244.88 and the paid was $763.11.
Had this procedure done to check heart due to abnormal stress test. Did not need any stents or any other procedure as everything was negative. I about had a heart attack when I opened the bill!!!

My angiogram was done through the wrist area, with no stents, and was over in 20 minutes. 30 k ...really? I wish I was one of the millions in the U.S. that had no insurance to rape, then I could have gotten it for free. So now I am looking at 2k I owe immediately!!!!! This price is ridiculous and Kadlec Medical Center in Richland Washington should be ashamed and the community should be appalled. Shame on you Kadlec!!!!
