For dental contouring (also called tooth reshaping), the cosmetic dentist uses a laser, sanding drill and/or abrasive strips to make your tooth more attractive by removing minute amounts of tooth enamel. Usually no anesthetic is needed, and the procedure can be used to correct slightly crooked, chipped or cracked teeth or to shorten a long tooth.

Typical costs:
  • Fees for dental contouring range from $50 -$500 per tooth, depending on how much work is needed, local rates, and the expertise and reputation of your cosmetic dentist. Generally dental insurance does not cover dental contouring unless the reshaping is necessary because of an accident or injury.
What should be included:
  • Dental contouring is relatively pain-free, and often can be done in one visit to the dentist. Typically a cosmetic dentist will first take x-rays to judge the location and size of the pulp of each tooth, and to be sure there's enough bone to support the teeth. The cosmetic dentist will then mark each tooth with a pencil, and use the marks as a guide to sculpt the tooth with a sanding drill or laser. Abrasive strips will be moved back and forth to shape the sides, and then the dentist will smooth and polish the teeth. A typical treatment takes 15 to 30 minutes per tooth. An Atlanta dentist provides an overview.
  • Except in certain circumstances, dental contouring is not typically a substitute for braces. But dental contouring can be performed just after your braces are removed, to fix minor imperfections that still remain. Contouring is often combined with other procedures, such as dental bonding, teeth whitening or veneers.
Discounts:
  • Dental college clinics often provide services by supervised students or faculty at reduced rates; check DentalSite.com for school locations.

  • The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentists recommends asking about a dentist's specific training and experience in cosmetic procedures, as well as references and before-and-after photos of past patients. Be sure you understand exactly what the cosmetic dentist plans to do during the dental contouring procedure. Referrals to cosmetic dentists are available from the Academy.
