Medical Center: Sunrise ER | Condition: Transient Ischemic Attack |
Tests or Treatment Required: blood, urine, ekg, chest xray,Cat scan |
Daughter drove me to Sunrise Hospital ER after I had TIA. Total time spent there was 2 1/2 hrs. They monitored blood pressure, did blood & urine tests, Chest x ray, Cat scan & EKG. Dr. said do this do that, push this, pull that & squeeze to check for damage & gave me an aspirin. I got bills for lab, radiologist & doctor totaling $1,524.00. Got a letter from the hospital saying ER visit cost $13,844.00. I had to call & request an itemized bill!$9.00 for 1 aspirin, $4,016.00 Cat Scan, $5,504.00 Lab,$725.00 Radio/Diag,$945.00 EKG,$564.00 Blood Bank & $2081.00 ER Services. Tried last year & this year to get insurance. I'm too young for Medicare,(63)make too much for Medicaid & can't afford AFFORDABLE care. For myself, after subsidies, it would be over $300.00 per month plus $5,000.00 deductible. I pay a separate bill for hubby's VA. Total for us would be $800.00 per month. That is 25% of my already budgeted fixed income. If Obama can afford healthcare, maybe he has extra $ to pay my bill! |

Medical Center: Oviedo ER | Condition: Ingrown toenail |
Tests or Treatment Required: none - a prescription |
I noticed my 12 year old has a red/swollen toe on a Thursday night. Not wanting to take him out of school the next day, I sent my husband to the ER thinking we could just get an antibiotic. They gave us a prescription which my local supermarket, Publix, filled for free. He only saw a nurse, no doctor. All she did was look at his toe. We have insurance too. |

Medical Center: sprang arm | Condition: |
Took my daughter to the ER and the nurse came in to ask some questions. Then minutes later the doctor came in and check on her arm and told us that she only sprang her arm. There is nothing he can do but suggest she do nothing for the next few days. We spent 20 minutes in the ER and had to pay the hospital room $500 and the MD $500 for telling her she needs to do nothing. I could of just have her stay home. How ridiculously expensive! |

Tests or Treatment Required: Blood test, one xray, one ECG |
Had chest pains, went to the ER for about two hours. Saw the main doc for a total of about 5 minutes during that time. Had an xray, ECG, and a few tubes of blood drawn. Hospital didnt realize my insurance had just lapsed and instead of signing me up through the state, they let me walk without telling me. Ended up with a 20k bill in collections still and Im only 25. |

Medical Center: Harris Regional Hospital | Condition: Fishing lure caught in thumb |
Tests or Treatment Required: Lure removal |
I got one hook of a Rapala lure's treble hook embedded into my left thumb while trying to release a fish. (I know, I'm supposed to catch the fish - not them catch me ...) It was at 8:00 PM on an August Saturday evening and our Urgent Care Center was closed so ... off to the emergency room. I waited 3 hours (there was a rodeo in town - place was full of drunk cowboys) and was given a Tetanus shot by a nurse. Doc came in and gave me a shot of Lidocaine where the hook had entered. Left, came back in 10 minutes, had me hold my wrist down on a counter, tied a monofilament line around the bend of the hook and jerked it out. Worked great! I felt no pain (except for the shot) and was bandaged and back out to my Jeep quickly. I paid $150 on the spot for my co-pay and the physician's billing company billed me for $1,070.00 which was applied to my deductible. I expect to pay the doctor a reasonable fee but this seems a little high for 10 minutes work? Don't ya think? |

Medical Center: venice regional medical CTR | Condition: dizziness |
Tests or Treatment Required: CAT scan |
after my car accident by 5 days felt very dizzy, couldn't stand up, tried to call all the doctors just to order CAT scan to make sure everything ok, all doctors in the area even walk in clinic and urgent care refused to take me and insisted that I have to go to ER. in ER they did two CAT scan and one pain pill for 4 hours and charging the auto insurance that much $28810.53. Got a phone call from my auto insurance that my coverage is only $10.000 and I have to pay the rest, call the billing center they charged me for 4 CAT scan and I only did 2 and each one cost about $5000 and ER visit cost $2500 and one pain pill is $13 and extra. I couldn't believe it. CAT scan out with no health insurance is between $200 to $300.I wish our country gets better with health coverage. that is too much. there is no rules. everyone charge whatever they want. |

Tests or Treatment Required: Concussion fractured orbital socket |
All the doctors did was check my pupils ask me what I did, made me wait forever multiple times (I was the only one there). Then a CT scan, told me I'm fine don't fall down any more stairs. But $16k?!?!?!?! To be told "you're fine and so is your eye, just don't hit your head again for a month or two" If something was wrong I would have died in the damn waiting room because it took forever. Can someone confirm that this is a unreasonable price? I'm checking out all of these prices and I just feel swindled |

Medical Center: Hunters Creek ER | Condition: good |
Tests or Treatment Required: none |
New ER and part of Orlando Health, used to be Orlando Regional. They hide the diagnostic services and any prescriptions/shots in the "emergency room visit" . Then when you don't get all the services (didn't have the tetnus shot, etc.. , it's not itemized on the billing office or Aetna's insurance office bill so you can't refute it. Then a routine visit for a slight bump and 1/8" cut on the top of the head is a level 2 sevice ( no diagnostic services performed to justify a level 2) . |

Medical Center: Baylor Med Center-Irving | Condition: Anxiety Attack |
Tests or Treatment Required: CT, blood labs |
While visiting TX, wife suffered racing heart rate and chest pains. Took to Baylor Med Center ER. There for 1.5 hours. Doctor visited with her for about 10 minutes advising that she either had an anxiety attack or was dehydrated. Given 2 saline IV bags and released. ER doc spent about 10 minutes with her without performing any procedures. The ER doc billed $1000 ($12,000 per hour), which according to ins company was $800 over UCR. Ins attempted to negotiate bill, but was told basically to pound sand. I am told there is no recourse to fight doctors who charge extremely higher than UCR. Checking web forums, it is suggested to check around for in-network doctors. Didn't think about that while I thought wife was having a heart attack. Gee, what was I thinking? |

Medical Center: Baylor Carrollton | Condition: indigestion |
Tests or Treatment Required: X-Ray, EKG, Blood work |
Went to the ER for chest pains. We were there for maybe an hour total. Trainee did most of the work except the IV - took her 3 tries and assistance from 2 RNs. This amount is only for ER. We have also gotten bills from the lab, pharmacy, and Doc ($1368.00). Total bills will be more than $4000 when all is said and done. |

Medical Center: CHOMP | Condition: migraine |
Tests or Treatment Required: Blood panel, 2 other labs |
went in for a condition that ended up benign, but they ordered 3 labs for 650.00, 401.00, and 220.00 - normally these labs are 1/10th that price. A basic blood count for example, is utually 40 - 80 bucks, the one they charged 650 for is usually 80. Their explanation? "Whenever you get services in an ER they're going to be VERY expensive." The simple blood tests were 10% of the total charges. |

Medical Center: West Allis Memorial | Condition: |
Tests or Treatment Required: X-rays |
just got an EOB from my insurance (Allegiance) I went in on July 4th 2013 for a severe sprained ankle. the "charge" for Emergency room-General Class was $703.00 (I did not see an actual doctor, I saw an ER Registered nurse, got some Xrays and was administered a pain-killer, crutches and a splint, and a reference to a doctor for the following week. my insurance covered 105.45 of the 703 bill and I am responsible for $597.55 the 597.55 was just to walk through the door, the x-ray charge and pharmacy (aka pain killer) was a separate. X-ray charge: 501.00 (EOB says i'm responsible for 425.85) and the painkiller was 16.68 and I am responsible for 14.18 so in total a trip to the ER, X-rays for my foot, and a painkiller pill equals to 1220.68 (with my insurance covering 183.10, I am left to pay 1037.58) |

we pay almost everything out of pocket as we are self employed. We spend over $15,000/yr on medical in a good year. I agree that there are many overcharging hospitals and docs, but you will see the flip side if moving to Canada! There's still a reason people come from the world over to the US for medical treatments. My spouse got hurt while fishing in Canada, they wouldn't even touch him without cash on the barrel head!!. Call the docs office and the hospital and ask for a discount. When they say they can't do that, ask to talk with a supervisor. It's worked for me more often than not. Do it before you get the bill. |

Medical Center: Lake Wales Medical Center, Fl. | Condition: Pain in stomach |
Tests or Treatment Required: Comp Metab Panel and IV for pain med. |
I had a real bad pain in my stomach, it was at 10:00 pm and no doc. office open. I went to the ER and was checked in. I told the person checking me in that I though I was having a bad acid reflex att. they ask if I could be preg. I told them no. I can't have kids and I'm in menopause. The Doctor on duty came in and ask where was the pain. I told him and I never seen him again until he came in and said that my test came back (blood work) good no issues. The doctor is charging me $706.00 he never even touched me in any way. Did not push on my stomach. The hospital is Charging me 3379.19 for the blood work and IV and pain meds. So over 4000.00 for that! I mean lets get real. Oh and they said that they did a preg. test and that was $141.05 LOL. I'm not going to let them get away with this. one way or another I will get my cost reduced. never will give up on this RIPOFF! |

My son had been very sick for a week, he had seen a regular doctor earlier in the week, he got worse. Tried and was unable to get him an appointment anywehre - had no choice but the ER. A Doctor took all of 10 minutes to examine him and wrote a prescription to treat a staph infection. No tests were run, no medicines were given. $1613 for that - and that doesn't even include the seperate doctor's bill I have yet to receive. This is crazy!! |

Your estimate of $150 for a visit for a "minor laceration" is wildly low. The sutures themselves will cost at least that much. |
